Waring MBB518 Professional Quality Food & Beverage Blender, Stainless Steel

Star Rating (232 reviews)

Research says:

Bandleader and inventor Fred Waring introduced the first blender in 1936; more than 60 years later the Waring blender remains the standard for the field. Tall and old-fashioned looking with a plated metallic finish on its base, this blender will crush ice and blend frozen fruit beautifully in a few seconds. This blender feels sturdy: the lid, with a cap that doubles as a 1-ounce measurer, fits securely, and the pitcher, made of thick, ridged glass, won't wobble. Many chefs prefer a blender rather than a food processor for soups and creamy sauces--the blades of a good blender whirl more quickly than those of a food processor and will refine a thin liquid such as cream of tomato soup to an incomparably silky texture. This blender is definitely up to that task. The fixed, self-cleaning stainless-steel blades on the base of the pitcher mean the lid is the only separate part to wash.

I had high expectations when I purchased a blender in this price range, this blender is better than I had expected. It is heavy and sturdy. Easy to clean. Absolutely no leaks. More powerful than I needed. Easily beats out every other blender I have ever used or owned.

I LOVE that it does not have 10, 20, or 50 speed settings like other blenders. Now that I dont have them, I realize I dont need them, HI and LOW is PERFECT.

I just love this blender! It's so simple to use, and clean, and it's strong enough to blend all the veggies and fruits I throw into it. I call myself the Blender Queen, because when I go home from work for lunch every day, I put in some liquid (juice or water) then throw in whatever veggies and fruits I want to consume and wallah, a healthy addition to my lunch! I've only had the blender for a couple months, so I can't testify for time, but I'm pretty sure it's going to last for a long time.

I read quite a few reviews on this blender and was so glad I made the decision to purchase. I'd pay full price for it. I love to cook and own a couple appliances but not many. I have an old blender (made of plastic and who knows what else), that served its purpose in college, however that was ten years ago. I almost decided to get a combo blender/food processor, however I always said I'd stick with Cuisinart for the food processor. I did debate between the similar classic Oster for this blender as well

I have been so frustrated with other blenders that I couldn't believe a blender that works as well as this could actually exist. The connection from the base to the glass is designed so that it connot wear out. I have bought two Oster beehive blenders and have had to replace the bottom piece many times because it becomes stripped so easily. The last part I bought was completely stripped after less than 10 uses. This blender performs very well and blends ice and frozen fruit effortlessly. I have used it

Read the negative comments about this blender carefully, because they are all true, to some degree. This blender mixes thick liquids and soft foods readily and quite quickly, but fails miserably at blending almost anything frozen. And the motor does smell as if it is about to burn out when it has the least trouble blending ingredients, which occurs frequently. I have the Oster 4096 blender also, and at almost 40% less in price, the Oster outshines this Waring by a mile. Waring should be ashamed of this p

I purchased this item because this firm has replacement parts in the event a component should break as it inevitably does with Oster and especially GE. I have used it a few times and it seems to strain and lack power when the container is quite full although it seems to get the job done. There is a smell however that is similar to heated plastic so I am not sure I will keep it. I have been trying to find Braun appliances which were absolutely unkillable and simply the BEST but they are no longer availa

It has very high build quality, works great (a bit noisy, but really all blenders are, this one no more so), looks great, and has a great warranty. Sadly, the motor gave out after a few months of use. We sent it back to the factory and had a new one waiting for us when we got home 2 days later. Great customer service as well! I couldn't recommend this more.

I have to say it... this is *the* ideal blender. It's simple without a million options that don't mean anything. The construction is great. It's easy to clean. It also is shaped in a way that you can actually pour out of it without making a huge mess. It's exactly what I was looking for.

For those who are wondering: I make lots of smoothies, mixed drinks, and soups. (Handles ice & frozen bananas very well.)

Finally, a blender that works! I was looking for a blender with lots of power because I make frozen drinks and smoothies several times a week. I tried to squeak by with a cheaper blender - I tried Hamilton Beach, Osterizer, and a "Smoothie Maker" that were all advertised as great for making frozen drinks - none of them worked. Not one of them crushed ice, and after a few uses, the motors on all of them started smoking, even though I did not run them more than 30 seconds at a time.

I decided I needed to spend more to get something that actually worked. The reviews for this blender were so helpful. I was trying to decide between the Waring and the KitchenAid or Cuisinart, and I am so glad that I chose the Waring. It crushes ice and frozen fruit in seconds, and I love the non removable blades! Very easy to clean! One tiny drop of dishwashing liquid, fill halfway with warm water, whir for a minute, rinse, and done!

So far I have made pina coladas with lots of ice; fruit smoothies with frozen strawberries and frozen bananas; peanut sauce; gazpacho; and thick soups, all with perfect results.

I received this blender as a gift and was delighted to finally have a good, solid blender that can crush ice when making drinks. And this blender does that well. However, when I tried a new recipe that required a blender to mix liquids without ice I wound up with a big mess to clean up. What I didn't realize is that the clear plastic dome that screws into the black rubber lid doesn't create a leak-proof seal. After you line up the dome with the lid and turn twist it into place a gap remains where the liquid can escape. When I turned on the blender the liquid shot up through the gaps and landed all over me and the surrounding walls. I called the company for a new lid thinking the one I had was defective. The new one had the identical defect. This blender is good for semi-solids and mixing liquids with ice, but definitely not for blending/mixing liquids.

We don't use our blender every day. So, when we do get it out we expect it to work. We got this one as a gift two years ago. We've used it maybe 2-3 times and it has already broken. The blade just fell off in the process of blending a soup that was not very hot and consisted of very soft squash. I will never purchase this brand again. A total waste of money.

I go through blenders quicker than anyone I know so perhaps it's my fault and not the blenders fault. This blender looked sturdy enough and it claimed to be professional so I gave it a shot. It worked great until I tried to blend some prunes or dates, I can't recall. It didn't like that and a motor component melted as it struggled through the fruit paste. I was disappointed since I thought this might be the last blender I would buy for a while. I took it apart to see what failed and noticed a small plastic piece melted onto the motor. I guess if you know the does and don'ts of blending then this is good one. For myself, I think I need to keep looking.

We owned this blender for a year and a couple months. Used it mainly on the weekends in the summer, to make smoothies with frozen fruit, so I wouldn't say we were heavy users. I burned the motor out today--the unit was visibly smoking after running for about a minute or so. This particular blender was a replacement for a previous Waring that lasted us over 10 years before it died (also from a burned out motor). Not sure if this blender was a dud or whether the quality of the Waring motors is getting worse.

I got this in January 2009 and it broke in July 2009. It was probably used 25 times, of which 1/3 were frozen fruit smoothies, 1/3 were frozen cocktails (ice crushing), and 1/3 were 'wet blends' with little resistance.

The blender worked great and I had no problems with it. In fact, it was one of the best blenders I had used and in fact in some ways was better at blending than larger VitaMix blenders.

As background, I have blended hundreds of smoothies and so I am accustomed to operating blenders. If I needed to add a bit of water to chop ice, fine. If this blender's motor had burned out after 4 years I'd be upset, but would move on. However, this blender broke in a way that no product like this should ever break in 100 years of use.

The Details: The blade is 'screwed' in by something that looks like a metal screw but is definitely not stainless steel (it is made to look like brushed stainless steel, but it is not). Rather, it looks like some kind of composite metal/cement material with a brushed outside for looks.

I tried blending something and was surprised not to hear any sound. When I looked at it I discovered that the blade and top of the blade-screw had literally broken completely in half from the bottom of the blade-screw. The blade was 'floating' in the smoothie I was blending.

I could have easily poured this smoothie (thick) into a glass without seeing the blade and gotten it into my mouth, lips, or tongue and been badly cut.

I want to be clear, this design flaw is so bad that the engineers who designed and approved its use should be fired. You don't hold together a fast moving blade at 550 watts with a screw made of junk material.

I bought this unit at Bed Bath & Beyond expressly for the ability to use their long-term product return polic if needed. All I can say is that they get 5 stars for taking back this 1 star product.

I will never buy a Waring product again.

Unfortunately, the cast steel shaft broke in two pieces this morning (while not being used, but while drying upside down!). I returned the item to where I purchased it (The Kitchen Place) for a new one, but am now doubtful as to its potential for another defect.

It worked quite well for that purpose until... it broke after 1 month of light use - the threaded shaft which the blade is attached to just snapped clean off. The metal on the inside of the snapped shaft looks like a cheap, weak, alloy. It's sad that Waring has decided to cut corners in this way. They don't make them like they used to. Not recommended.

My wife and I received a Waring Blender (60th Anniversary edition) from our wedding registry at Williams Sonoma. During the second time we ever used it, the blade shaft snapped in two while trying to crush ice. We immediately returned it to Williams Sonoma, and the store manager told us that they get 4-5 Waring blenders returned every week!! This obviously is not the same company anymore, so please pay attention to the other negative reviews, which seem to be indicative of our experience.

P.S. - We traded ours in for a Kitchen Aid, which works 100 times better than the Waring.

I make a killer margarita! Unfortunately, they have a tendency to kill blenders too. I've had seven blenders over the past 25 years. My first was a fantastic second-hand 1970's era Waring that lasted through eight years of ice crushing labor (and who knows what it went through before I got it). The motor finally burned out, partly due to my failure to replace a leaky pitcher. Nothing else even came close to lasting as long, including two top of the line Kitchen Aid blenders. So I finally spent the big bucks on a New Waring Pro. I thought I was so smart. Then after three years (of admittedly heavy use), it just stopped. I disassembled it and discovered that the motor was wired with very thin wires, and one wire diving into the motor coil had simply broken--no way to fix it. My question is: why does Waring try to save pennies by using fine gauge wire for a supposedly professional grade model? Bad design. Save your money, and buy three cheap models instead of this expensive one.

This blender replaced a KitchenAid model, and there's really no comparison between the two. The Waring is superior at blending, pouring and clean-up. I've mostly used it for smoothies, using frozen fruit, protein powder and milk. It whips everything into a finely blended froth in no time. The blades are very efficient and create a whirlpool effect to ensure everything is blended thoroughly. Clean-up is a breeze - just rinse out, add a drop of soap and some water, blend for a few seconds, rinse out the soap, and then blend once more with clean water to ensure everything is rinsed. I don't see any issues with only having two speeds. It's great to work with such a high-quality product.

I don't typically write product reviews, but my horrible experience obliged me to write this one.

I purchased this blender from Starbucks about 6 months ago. It worked great until about a week ago when the blender started to have trouble spinning to speed. A few days ago, the blender started to give off a strong electrical/burning smell so I immediately stopped using the blender and called customer service.

As some of the other reviews mentioned, Waring customer service and their warranty are horrible! Definitely not what someone would expect from a company with such high reputation or a high priced product. Even though my blender was clearly under warranty, they required me to send it in at my own cost. Once they receive it, "they will determine whether it will be repaired under warranty or if there will be charges". They would not even give an estimate for the turnaround. So basically, you'd have to send it in at your own cost, then wait for them to look at it and possibly have to pay extra money, and get a repaired/previously defective product back. This, of course, could mean at least a few weeks without a blender to use.

My previous blender was a cheap Black & Decker model. It crapped out after about 9 months of use (still 50% longer than the Waring costing about 5x the price). When it crapped out, Black & Decker simply shipped me a brand new replacement and asked me to mail them the power cord cut from the blender.

So, be warned. Waring is still charging for its previous reputation, but that reputation will probably not last much longer as the new ownership is apparently tarnishing the brand and destroying its value. The quality of their product is clearly not what it used to be, and the customer service is outrageously bad. I would definitely not buy another Waring product again.
